Connecting Dynamic AI to Microsoft SQL Server Express

Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008 Express Edition (SQL Server Express) is a powerful and reliable data management product that delivers rich features, data protection, and performance for embedded application clients, light Web applications, and local data stores.

Necessary drivers are almost always present on windows computers. To make sure you have the latest version of the drivers, you can download and install the latest Microsoft Data Access Components package from Microsofts web site.

To connect to a Microsoft SQL Express database, use the database tab (bottom of the screen) and select NEW | Database connection. Pick Microsoft SQL Database from the Type list. Now follow the next steps.

Specify the location of the SQL Express server (as host name or IP address) in the Server field. You also should specify the instance of the server (in this case: SQLEXPRESS).

The Owner/Catalog field is optional. Below is an example of connecting to the local instance of a Express installation restricting access to the Production Owner:

Dynamic AI uses Microsoft SQL Server Authentication for connecting to the SQL Express server - enter username and password of an account with permissions to read the necessary tables.

The system account is typically called SA - if you cannot connect with the chosen account, it sometimes helps to try using SA. If SA works, then the fault lies with the permissions of the other account.

The SQL Express Server must accept SQL-Server Authentication.

Test the connection by pressing the ‘Test Connection’ button.

Click SAVE to save the connection. Now you should see the database in the database Explore and be able to browse and use Tables and Views of the database.

If no Owner/Catalog is specified all underlying schema's that the user has access to will be available from Explore database connection:

If Owner/Catalog is specified - only that particular schema will be accessible:
