This document describes how to prepare a Dynamic AI server machine to connect to a remote database running Oracle 9.
For information on connecting dynamic to Oracle in general, read here:http://support.dynamicai.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=116
For information about trobuleshooting permissions to the Client installation, read here: http://support.dynamicai.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=207#207
Further information can be found in Oracles own documentation library for Oracle 9.1 or Oracle 9.2
Both connection types depend on an oracle client being present on the Dynamic AI server in order to connect to the remote Oracle server. If the Oracle server software is installed on the same machine that runs the Dynamic AI software, you can assume that the necessary client software is already present.
Below is information on using the Oracle Net Configuration Assistant to create the "TNS name", that Dynamic AI will use to connect to the remote Oracle 9i server.
Information on installing the Oracle Client follows after that.
Creating a TNS name with the Oracle Net Configuration Assistant.
The TNS name is a part of the Oracle client configuration that assigns a logical name to a specific Oracle database.
The Net configuration Assistant is found in the start menu under Oracle - OraHome9x / Configuration and Migration Tools
On first run the assistant offers to configure naming methods. These step will not be repeated on subsequent runs.
In this example, we do not use a direcotry service.
Client need to know what Oracle version we want to connect o
Enter the name of the Oracle Service on the remote server. The default is "Orcl9", but it is often changed as part of the server installation.
Chose the communications method. TCP is usually correct. Ask the network administrator if in doubt.
Now, enter the Host Name or IP address of the remote server. Also enter the TCP port number if the dafault has been changed on the server.
You can now perform a connection test to see if the client software is configured properly.
If the connection test fails, try to change the login to an account you know have access.
Now supply a logical name for the connection you created. This is the name you will be using to refer to the server from Dynamic AI
Installing the client
Oracle 9 is an older version of oracle. Client software is usually shipped with the server software, but can also be obtained from Oracle Technology Network - registration of a free oracle account may be required.
Installation is fairly easy, but can take some time. There are several versions of the Oracle 9i series client software - this example shows version 9.0.1.1.1
You will be asked to verify installation file location and destination folder:
The client can be installed with 2 default options as well as a user customized option. Although the client install can be made fairly small by customizing installed options, we recommend using either of the 2 default options, as they include all necessary components plus some administration tools that can come in handy for maintenance or throubleshooting.
After clicking Next several times, a summary of the installation will be shown
After confirmation, file copying will begin. When completed, the installer will offer to run the configuration tool Oracle Net Configuration Assistant see section above.
If you have the necessary connection details available, go ahead and create the TNS connection, otherwise, you can find the Assistant in the Start menu under Oracle/configuration and migration tools.
Installation is now complete.
