Connecting Dynamic AI to IBM DB2 Express

IBM DB2 9 Express is a full featured hybrid relational and XML database system. It is provided free of charge for businesses, ISVs, application developers, students and hobbyists and anyone else who needs enterprise class data server without license costs.

The database is availble for download here:

http://www-01.ibm.com/software/data/db2/express/

You can connect to IBM DB2 either using OLEDB or ODBC. Usually the OLEDB connection is faster than the ODBC and the other benefit of the OLEDB connection is that you don't need to defined a ODBC connection before setting the connection up in Dynamic AI. Whether you choose ODBC or OLEDB the DB2 client OLEDB/ODBC software (included with a DB2 Express installation e.g.) needs to be installed.

OLEDB

To connect Dynamic AI to a IBM DB2 database, open the database connection screen in Dynamic AI and select IBM DB2 OLEDB from the Type list.

- If the server is local - you can leave it blank.
- Specifying Owner/Catalog is optional.
- Enter the Database name.
- Enter a valid username and password.

ODBC

To get the connection to work, the ODBC driver for IBM DB2 should be installed. This can be checked in the Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> ODBC Driver.

Under the tab System DSN select the IBM DB2 ODBC driver and press ‘Add’.

The next screen will appear:

- Enter a description (optional)
- Select the database name

- Enter a valid username and password
- Test the connection by clicking "Connect"

- Press ‘OK’

The data source is now installed and can be used in Dynamic AI.

To connect Dynamic AI to a IBM DB2 database, open the database connection screen in Dynamic AI and select IBM DB2 from the Type list.

Enter the ODBC name/System DSN (or create an ODBC connection - see below).

Test the connection by pressing the ‘Test Connection’ button.
